Domplan is a utility service provider in the city of Kranj, Slovenia, specializing in gas distribution and energy services.

Before implementation of the Jooby solution, gas metering at the company was entirely manual. Employees had to regularly collect meter readings on site, which not only required significant labor effort, but also resulted in delays in accessing data. This was because it was often impossible to physically reach the meter due to its location inside a locked apartment.

The delays in obtaining consumption data prevented the company from responding promptly to changes in the network or identifying any abnormalities in usage. In addition, the company had no clear visibility into actual consumption levels and were unable to accurately plan gas procurement for upcoming periods.

The lack of up-to-date data at the right time limited analytical capabilities and reduced the efficiency of operational processes. Under such conditions, scaling the metering system and improving billing accuracy became difficult.

The key objective of the project was to transition to a digital gas metering model with automatic data collection, centralized processing, and the use of data for monitoring, analytics, as well as improving the efficiency of gas distribution network management.

The Jooby solution

To implement the project, a retrofit remote data collection solution based on NB-IoT and the Nexavia platform was selected. This solution was chosen as it would enable the direct transmission of meter readings into the Domplan ecosystem. 

The solution is based on the Jooby EPHIR RMS NB-IoT radio module with smart sensors for gas meters, which capture pulses received from the gas meters and ensure their transmission over the NB-IoT network. The data is then delivered to a centralized system where it is used for monitoring, visualization, and analysis.

As part of the project, 1,000 battery-powered NB-IoT devices of various modifications were deployed, including the Jooby EPHIR RMS NB-IoT and Jooby OMNI RM NB-IoT 4PU series, adapted for different meter types and installation scenarios. The solution, which was implemented across multiple sites within the gas distribution network, required consideration of distributed infrastructure and varying operating conditions.

 

 

When designing the system, special attention was paid to connection reliability across the entire coverage area, the accuracy of pulse-based metering for correct billing, and the long service life of the devices, helping minimize maintenance needs. 

An important requirement was the integration of the solution with the Nexavia platform already used by Domplan in order to ensure centralized data management without the need to change existing processes.

Additional complexity arose from the operating conditions: the equipment was installed in outdoor and municipal infrastructure, including hard-to-reach and distributed locations, and had to operate reliably under various weather conditions. The deployment was carried out in stages, with the installation of devices and their connection to the platform synchronized, which made it possible to meet the specified deadlines and ensure the proper commissioning of the system.

The solution fully eliminated the key limitations associated with manual metering: delays in receiving data were removed, consumption transparency increased, and network management became more predictable and controllable. 

The company gained virtually continuous access to data and the ability to allocate resources more efficiently while reducing operational costs.

Cooperation

Cooperation with Domplan and Kuem is ongoing and includes technical support, further system optimization, and potential expansion of the solution. The project demonstrates how the use of IoT solutions enables utility companies to move from fragmented metering to full-scale digital resource consumption management.
