Light is Art: Pictures Without Paint

Light is Art: Pictures Without Paint

Artists used to depict the light only by colors and shades. However, that has changed since 20-s of XIX century. László Moholy-Nagy, Hungarian avant-gardist, claimed “Light is paint” and that was the day when light became a matter of art.

Now it’s even easier. Artists, designers and engineers use light and multimedia technology to create stunning installations. We collected three examples of what can be done with light if used not just as an illumination source.

LUMES, interactive LED wall

Cabrini Hospital, Malvern, Australia

Filmed by Shannon Morris Photography

ENESS design studio together with DesignInc and Cabrini Hospital created in the pediatric hospital ward an animated wall, which reacts to visitors’ actions. It has 15 themes and they change as time goes by: at daytime the grass is growing and at night owls and stars appear.

micro | macro, light installation

In terms of «Infosphere» exhibition at the ZKM Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, artist and composer Ryoji Ikeda has presented two installations: the planck universe [micro] and the planck universe [macro].  They were made during his visit to CERN after the victory in Prix Ars Electronica Collide@CERN.

«The planck universe»  is based on particle physics and cosmology fundamentals. Inspired by supersymmetry, Ikeda depicted one of the Universe scale and size physics theories.

All these installations are so different but still there is a thing that makes them alike - seeking for new light application ideas. Together artists and engineers create magnificent projects and we, the Jooby team, are following their example so that you could create some magic at your place, too.
